What PoE means
Power over Ethernet supplies compatible equipment with power through a network cable that also carries data. A compatible PoE recorder or switch can power the connected camera.
Why it is useful
It can simplify installation by avoiding a separate local power adapter at each camera. A suitable central recorder or network design also makes it easier to manage several cameras together.
Compatibility still matters
The power required by each camera, the total power budget, cable quality and distance must be considered. Not every network port supplies PoE, and not every PoE device has the same power requirements.
Think about outages
If the equipment supplying power stops, the camera will generally stop too. A suitable backup power arrangement may support continuity for a limited time. The design should account for the recorder and network as well as cameras.
Make it specific to your property
