The basic difference
An NVR generally records digital video from IP cameras over a network. A DVR typically works with compatible analogue camera signals, often using coaxial cabling. Some recorders support a mixture of technologies.
Compatibility comes first
Do not assume every IP camera works fully with every NVR. Supported protocols, codecs, resolution and product features matter. Existing analogue systems also have format and recorder limits.
Look beyond the channel count
Check the maximum recording resolution, incoming bandwidth, storage capacity and functions needed for playback and remote access. Spare channels are only useful if the rest of the recorder can support them.
Upgrading an existing system
Assess the cables, power arrangements, cameras and recorder together. Some infrastructure may be reusable, but an equipment list and site inspection are needed before promising a simple swap.
Make it specific to your property
Assess your existing system with Borders CCTV. We serve towns and rural properties across the Scottish Borders. A conversation about your site is the next step towards a useful specification.
