There is no universal 30-day requirement
The ICO says retention should be based on the purpose of the recording. Keeping footage simply because there is spare storage is not an appropriate reason to retain it indefinitely.
Choose and document the period
Consider how quickly an incident is likely to be discovered and reviewed. Use the shortest period that meets the purpose, and configure automatic deletion or overwriting accordingly.
Keep relevant incident clips separately
A specific incident may justify preserving relevant footage for longer. Limit access, record why it is being retained and review whether continued retention is necessary.
Check the real system
A stated retention setting is not enough if the recorder fills earlier or stops recording. Verify actual available history and check storage health. Storage calculations are estimates until checked against real recording.
Make it specific to your property
Check your recording system with Borders CCTV. We serve towns and rural properties across the Scottish Borders. A conversation about your site is the next step towards a useful specification.
