Define the purpose
Set out why cameras are needed, assess whether the monitoring is proportionate and identify the appropriate lawful basis. Consider staff, visitors and customers before choosing camera locations.
Give people clear information
Place suitable signs where people can see them before entering the monitored area. Explain the purpose and provide appropriate contact information. Keep a fuller privacy notice available; a website notice alone does not replace on-site signs.
Control recordings and access
Use suitable permissions, a documented retention period and a process for handling requests. Audio is more intrusive and needs specific justification. Check whether you must pay the ICO data protection fee.
Separate planning from data protection
A privacy-compliant design can still require planning or listed-building consent. Check the site, especially in conservation areas, and confirm responsibilities before installation.
Make it specific to your property
Discuss commercial CCTV with Borders CCTV. We serve towns and rural properties across the Scottish Borders. A conversation about your site is the next step towards a useful specification.
